Handmade is Always Best

Husbands are great. I can say that with confidence, despite only having had one for all of three weeks.

Before Christmas he insisted I leave the house for a few hours so that he could prepare my presents. That’s the sort of request I have no problem with. What I didn’t understand was that he was making my present, with his own hands. Not only that, but he was making something I’d shown him six months earlier and then forgotten about: a thread holder for the wall.

I love it.

It has forty nails in it, each one carefully placed, hammered in and bent to the right angle. It’s edged with some left over batten from when we repaired all of our sash windows. And best of all, he backed it with a terrible shirt he owns that I’ve always hated. Two gifts in one ;)

I was reading Manda’s post about giving handmade this morning and realised that Isaac had the same anxiety as he gave it to me. But there was really no need – I can feel every ounce of thought and love that went into it. I feel very lucky indeed.

Oh! I love your new thread board, how lucky and what a wonderful husband! Mmm.. I want one of those now (the thread board that is, I’m quite happy with the husband I have ;)

I found a great quote about giving handmade gifts. It said

“when i give a gift i made myself
first i feel proud, excited
and thoughtful
then i feel embarrassed
and silly
and then i feel like i’ve
given the best present
i could give….
a part of me….
and then i feel
embarrassed again.”

It really sums up how I feel.

By the way, thanks for the comment on my blog, I’ve replied to it in the comments section of the same post ;)

Wow – he’s a good ‘un! Lucky you, something to go in your new room.

I liked your ‘mental transit’ metaphor too. In typical me fashion, I am always too excited to get to my destination to truly enjoy the traveling bit, but after reading your post, I shall try.

Excellent! My boyfriend made me the exact same thing – backed with left over wallpaper to match my workroom and with 136 nails :)
I haven’t blogged it yet.
Enjoy your new toy (and new husband!) Ax

I love your new thread board! My threads live in a wooden pot normally in my sewing basket, although in the rush to tidy up for guests I pushed it away in the study and the dogs gleefully found them to be perfect chews! Wishing you both a very Happy New Year!
