Essentials

You know those sewing days where the one thing you use more than any other is the seam ripper? Yep, today was one of those. I battled on and have most of a finished top but I’ll refrain from showing it until I’ve finished the hems. I hate hemming. I’d like my next craft purchase to be a squadron of hemming elves who come out while I sleep and finish everything off. Not likely. I have got hold of a couple of things lately that have made life easier in other ways.

Wow. That’s a dull photo. But it’s of very exciting stuff, if you happen to get excited by interfacing, and boy, do i know some ladies who get excited by interfacing. This is knit interfacing. I never knew there was such a thing until the day I went to John Lewis and this was the only interfacing they had out. It was a bit more expensive than the normal stuff, but since you only really need it for facings and wotnot, it’s not getting used up in a hurry. It’s magical stuff, and essential if you’re sewing with knits, because it means the fabric still behaves like a knit.

Mmm. Pins. You can never have too many pins. I only just realised why these are called quilters pins. The pretty flower heads are flat, so you can slap your big ruler on top and rotary away. My word. Since a lot of bag making involves long straight lines I use the cutter a lot and round headed pins are just a big pain in the ass. As an added bonus these pins are super long too. Not cheap, but I guess you do get what you pay for.

So yes, four more sleeps til Japan, and I’m still trying to finish things to take with me. I planned it all ages ago, but you know plans – tricksy things…

If I had only 4 sleeps till Japan, I wouldn’t be doing much sleeping! Too exciting by far.

It’s the Merino that has thrown all the plans into confusion, no?

I had no idea that’s what the amazing purpose of quilter’s pins was, but now I do I want some. Very clever indeed.

Does the Rolled Hem function on an overlocker count as a “hemming elf”? Maybe not a squadronfull …

I love my long quilter’s pins. But don’t forget the heads are PLASTIC, so you can’t iron over them like you can the glass ones.
I have never heard of knit interfacing either. I want to use knits, but my hems always go baggy and horrid so I’m shying away – but you have made me want to have another go.

I’ve got some of those quilter’s pins – good for zooming along with the rotary cutter, aren’t they? I’ve often just stuck my ruler over the round headed pins, and it’s very slippery – it’s amazing I have any fingers, really.
You should know better than to suggest a photo of a new kind of interfacing is ‘dull’ :D I will be on the lookout for that now, despite my fear of knits!

I do get excited by interfacing so don’t worry.

Only three more days until your trip? How exciting too. (Even more so than interfacing.

I couldn’t find quilter’s pins on my last trip to the big city but I did want to have some.

Please, don’t forget to pack your toothbrush and such in your rush to get everything finished.

Ohh new interfacing for knits…

Does it have a brand name or summat?

You’ll finish the bits in time and you’ll no doubt have the crafty Japanese ladies up in arms over your handmade bag and dress goodness.

I have lost count of when the 4 sleeps would have been up so if you have not gone yet, then I hope everyone is feeilng better, that the journey is safe and that the holiday is everything you have been hoping for. (If I have miscounted the 4 sleeps and you are reading this when you have returned, well – I still hope all of those things)! Judy

I hope you’re enjoying Japan.

I had never heard of knit interfacing, either – but then I am scared of sewing with knits…
